Happy Birthday Week to me!

Surprise! I went to the gym and when I came back there was a birthday cake waiting for me! I tried to blow the candles out, but they kept coming back on. Jason had put trick candles on the cake. They almost burned all the way into the cake before we got them put out!

Flat Jason and the Dissertation

For those fans who were missing Flat Jason and were happy to see him in the short post about the Meneely Reunion, I have some exciting news. Flat Jason is now in a dissertation!

Recently alerted by my Google Alerts, I found that Rebecca A. Adelman included my flat husband and his activities in her discussion, "The Shadow Rules of Engagement: Visual Practices, Citizen-Subjectivity, and America's Global War on Terror." While I haven't read all of Ms. Adelman's work, the chapter including Flat Jason does bring up some interesting points. Mentioning of Flat Jason and the blog begin on page 141:

"The blog 'A Year Together...Apart,' maintained by a FlatDaddy wife named Amanda Stapp, is a public exploration of the vexed dynamics of life with a Flat."

She goes on to say, "Although similar content appears in still photos on the SFC website and sites like YouTube host a handful of comparable videos, 'A Year Together...Apart' is by far the most detailed chronicle of life with a Flat, and is unique because there are no children to excuse Amanda's imaginative play."

"It is hard to tell if she is just being playful; or if she is expressing the moderate craziness of long-distance lovesickness more candidly than others might; or if she is really not...okay."

Eventually she admits that, a compulsive blog reader, she dismissed the idea of my craziness. Interesting to hear an outsider's perspective...

First Day of Fall

Tuesday was the first day of fall! I'm so excited because it's my favorite season. It may take a little time to reach optimal autumn, but nothing can beat the cool, crisp, clean air and the beautiful colors of the leaves before they fall to the ground. Plus, my birthday is in the fall!

Jason and I found a park in Blue Springs for an after-work walk. We explored, chased ducks and played on the playground. We even stopped by Panera so Jason could show me his new favorite bagel: Cinnamon Crunch. Delicious!

Meneely Reunion

Even though Jason is back from deployment, he still seems to have a lot of Army obligations. He missed the Meneely Reunion, for the second year in a row, because he had to attend a commander conference. So, Flat Jason went with me to Chillicothe.

We stopped in to see Grandpa, who is recovering from a broken leg. He should be out of the nursing home by the end of October. We got to see the extended family, eat good food and win neat door prizes. I got some body spray and Flat Jason won a cute pink ceramic elephant. Later, we put some roses on Grandma's grave before we headed home.

Labor Day Weekend - Whew!

I thought when Jason and I finally moved in together we would start seeing more of each other. We mostly see each other at dinner, but now our weekends seem to be spent apart. When Labor Day weekend appeared on the horizon, I determined we would make use of our togetherness during that weekend.

The weekend started with Erin, A.J. and Tracy coming to visit. We went to the Royals game on Friday night. We got sweet deals on our tickets. Plus it was Buck Night and Fireworks Friday! The Royals lost and Jason stayed home to finish homework, but I was distracted by the fact that Erin wanted to get some dirt from the warning track for her brother.

Our guests stayed up late playing Wii, but we turned in somewhat early because we were signed up to run in the Royals 5K in the morning. We had planned on training for a couple of months so I could get in shape but that fell through. It wasn't going to be that hard for Jason because he has to run two miles for the Army anyway. I ran/jogged/shuffled for two miles without stopping. Then I had to walk a short distance. I ended up walking about a quarter of a mile in all. Jason kept encouraging me and entertaining me along the course. We finished with a time of 41:01. We were number 575 and 576 to cross the finish line. Afterward, Jason still had plenty of energy. Handstand anyone?

After the run, we went back to the house to find our guests still asleep. We woke them up in time for lunch. It's the last one that we will have with A.J. for at least a year because he is going to Japan on a mission trip.
Then Tracy, Jason and I went to the KC Irish Festival in Crown Center. Jason and Tracy enjoyed some meat pies while we listened to Irish music and history of Irish influences on American baseball. We stayed until the very end for Pogey because I saw them last year and absolutely loved them. They totally rocked it out again this year!

On Sunday, we went to the KC Ren Fest with Tracy. There were lots of craft booths, food and entertainment. We ran into the Maurers at the jousting event. Then we learned about samurai swords at another place.

We also stopped to see Jason's favorite juggler, Brian Wendling, perform. Jason got picked from the audience to help, along with another person I knew: Joey Martin. Jason also tried his hand at throwing axes and all three of us had some fun shooting bows and arrows.

Then we went home and watched some movies that continued the jousting/dueling theme of the day.

Worlds of Fun with the guys

Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun hosted a few different Public Safety Days where firefighters, police officers, military members, etc., got into the park for free and their family members got in for half price. I told Jason that if we were going to make it to the park this year, we should plan to go on one of those days because we are cheap. Jason invited some of his Army friends, and it became a couples date. Cool, I thought, we never do anything with Jason's friends. As the day approached, however, it became clear that it would be an outing for Amanda and the boys.

The day went better than I expected. We packed our lunch and met Cook and Cutter in the morning. By noon, we had already circled the park once and hit all the major roller coasters. We even stopped to play some games. Jason tried the Crazy Wire, and Cutter won a large prize for playing a bowling game. We ate some lunch, met McBee and made another pass around the park.

Then we dropped everything in the cars and changed clothes for some fun in the waterpark. After everything, we ate dinner with Cook and McBee at Chipotle. It was a fun day!

Back to school

As all the kiddos go back to school, my big kid went back to school, too! That's right. Jason is picking up some classes at a local community college and online. His first day of class was Aug. 18. I wish I had a photo to share of his first day, but I was working at the state fair and missed it.

Jason recently found out that his first test grade was an A. Unfortunately, the teacher didn't hand back the test, so I couldn't hang it on the fridge. Do you have any ideas to encourage Jason to keep his grades up?

2009 Missouri State Fair

The Missouri State Fair was MOre Fun Than Ever! Thanks to Jason for coming to visit me, Lauren for staying with me for more than half the fair, the firefighters for colorful commentary after a hard day of work, the troopers for teaching me to ride a Segway, Cross Canadian Ragweed for being awesome and Ronnie Dunn for coming to see the Mentos Soda Launch (and Brenda for capturing it). Big special thanks to my cousin Marissa for giving me a place to crash close to the fairgrounds but far enough to give me some space.
