Thunder on the Border

When I was younger, I definitely was not enthused about my parents insisting on visiting historic sites and living history farms. Now I am dragging my son to them. Seems like a parental thing to do, right?

We had a good time. Soren enjoyed stomping on all the wooden floors in the buildings: the tavern, the church, the mercantile, the blacksmith shop, the settler's house. (In case you are wondering, it makes a very loud noise!) He also liked watching the animals. We saw a mock funeral procession and a scuffle between the jayhawkers and the Missouri ruffians as part of the day's reenactments.

Happy Independence Day!

Soren loves his poppers, but really isn't interested in any fireworks or noisemakers that require fire to get going... and "isn't interested" might be an understatement... "terrified" might be more accurate. Poppers = calm. Smoke bombs = concerned. Sparklers = running for the house, on the verge of tears.  In the end, we donated to the neighbors' stash, watched their show and rounded out the night with an ice cream run.

Happy Independence Day!
